Bill and Melinda Gates Hall at Cornell University

Gates Hall at Cornell University houses the school’s Computer Science and Information Science departments with a goal to inspire and enable spontaneous interaction between the disciplines. The structure re-invigorates the campus with a modernized design approach and stark contrast against the traditional architecture of the campus. The building features unitized curtain wall system accented by an array of perforated stainless-steel panels. Utilizing 3D modeling software, Erie integrated these panels into the curtain wall by engineering a stainless-steel bracket system that was customized to fit each of the 90 unique panel shapes with over 1,100 bracket locations. Erie’s collaborative Design Assist involvement with the panel attachment strategy led to major cost reductions by optimizing connection points through simplified bracket designs and reduced quantities.
