The Brendan Iribe Center at the University of Maryland

The Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Innovation is an epicenter of collaboration for high-tech companies, government agencies, and student researchers in the fields of advanced computer science, augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, robotics, among others. This 6-story facility imposes a bold campus presence with a striking form and dynamic details such as an array of projected glass fins, horizontal bands of solar shading, and dramatic vertical fins that project nearly 6′ outwards, resolving the building’s horizontal features. Erie was selected to supply its unitized ENVIRO|FACADESĀ® system due to the adaptability and superior performance the curtain wall offers. To address the complexity and variety of integrated features into the curtain wall, Erie was involved in the development stages of the project in the capacity of a Design Assist partner to ensure the facade was optimized to meet the performance requirements, yet economically conscious in terms of meeting the budget. As a nod to the building’s namesake, Brendan Iribe (the co-founder of the Oculus Rift VR platform), the external design team generated the entire structure in virtual reality utilizing the Oculus Rift for contractors and stakeholders to immerse themselves in the project before the construction even commenced.
